NEW ATHLETICS SITE FROM HSC!

Finally Hampden Sydney College has developed a BIG TIME athletic website.  Evidently it is still in the development stage as the domain of www.HSCAthletics.com is not working.  The site has a nice preseason football video.  The football roster does not have profiles at this time but does have links with player photos.  Check it out!

I have found the prototype link and you can get a sneak peak by clicking here -http://hampdensydney.prestosports.com/landing/index

What did you do this Summer?

By Lee Tolliver
The Virginian-Pilot
Anyone who has ever fished for cobia knows what kind of frustrations this species can cause.  It's nothing for a big cobe to dart at a live spot or eel as if it's going to slam it, only to stop on a dime and toy with the offering. Or ignore it completely, then disappear under the boat.

Ned Horton was having that kind of day recently while sight-casting with Jeremy Hostetter in the Chesapeake Bay.  We'd been screwing around with a couple of them for a while, casting to see if they were interested," Horton said. "They weren't. So we decided to go in."

Horton and Hostetter are free divers - people who can hold their breath for long periods of time. Often the goal of free diving is to spear fish.  That's exactly what Horton had in mind. Wearing an aqua camo-colored wetsuit that helps him blend in with the environment while in the water and carrying a speargun, Horton jumped in and stayed under long enough for the cobia to settle down so he could bang off a good shot.

Horton caught the fish just behind the gill plate.  But just like bow hunting deer, the kill is rarely instant, and Horton had his hands full.

"It felt like it lasted about three hours," said Horton, a 21-year-old Hampden-Sydney College senior from Norfolk. "I went under several times and it took several tries to get a good shot. It took about 35 to 40 minutes to get him in.

Images from the Hampden Sydney Scrimmage

Below are photos from last Friday's scrimmage.  I was particularilly pleased to see the defense flying around.  There was a nice showing by fans too by my estimate about 250 people showed up to support the Tigers as they prepare for the upcoming season.

2nd String Offense scored on this drive.  QB Scott Cheney looked sharp, completing several passes.

ODAC Is Number 1 and HSC Leads the Way in Attendance

FROM: Doug Doughty and The Roanoke Times

After printing out 12 pages of 2010 football attendance stats for my later viewing pleasure, I had the bonus of having Roanoke Times prep editor Robert Anderson analyze them for me.  Anderson was gathering together some other material at the printer outside my office door when he remarked that Boston College, Duke and Wake Forest were among the three lowest-drawing teams at the BCS level.  You can add Maryland to that list.  I'm not completely sure who's in the BCS
Conferences these days (it seems to change every day) but here are the teams I found under the 40,000 threshhold:

President Howard's Son is Looking Good at VES

Virginia Episcopal School first-year football coach and athletic director Albert “Butch” Jennings motivates a small group of players in town for summer conditioning with a steady stream of positive affirmation. "We can be a dominant team this year," Jennings said Friday as five members of the Bishops’ backfield, including two of his stepsons, Ronnie and Caleb Stringfield, work out on the practice field behind the private school. "We’re going to shock people in this league. We’re going to be a more physical team, a more disciplined team. We’re going to catch the ball out of the backfield, we’re going to run out of the backfield...

Former HSC Student Named AD at Coast Guard

Timothy Fitzpatrick was named Director of Athletics at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy Friday by Rear Admiral Sandra Stosz, superintendent.  Fitzpatrick, the director of athletics at Texas A&M University Corpus Christi, will succeed Dr. Ray Cieplik, who retired in June after more than 40 years of service to the institution.  Fitzpatrick holds a master's degree in sports administration and facility management from Ohio University and a bachelor's degree in English from Hampden-Sydney College in Hampden-Sydney, Va.

Former HSC Head Coach Forced to Resign

Culicerto resigns as Vance Hugh School Coach

From the Charlotte Observer
Vance High football coach Phil Culicerto told the Observer in an emotional, exclusive interview Thursday night that he resigned because he has not fulfilled requirements to keep his N.C. teaching certificate.

A teacher's license comes up for renewal every five years. To keep it, the teacher must earn continuing education units (CEUs). Teachers can earn CEUs during that five-year window, through college courses, on-the-job training and professional development.

Culicerto, who will also surrender his teaching position, said CMS officials informed him this week that his certification was no longer valid.

Cranking up the blog!

Dear HSC Tiger Football Fans,

It has been a long off season.  It has been exceptionally long for me.  I stop writing on the blog last year after the Catholic game because I got behind and meant to catch-up.  Then I ruptured the disc in my back for the first time!  Needless to say the blog was the last thing on my mind.  I had surgery to correct my problem only to rerupture the same disc which required more surgery.  The good news is that I am almost healed and football season is right around the corner.

I sure could use use your help with the blog.  If you have photos please email me - davidritter@bellsouth.net or drop by the tailgate trailer for a beer or just to talk.  We always have plenty of both!
