How Many Points Will the Tigers Score?

The Local Slant

This is the article posted on the NC Wesleyan website.
Rocky Mount, N.C. - Freshman Jacques Alston scored a pair of rushing touchdowns and racked up 151 return yards, but it would not be enough on Saturday as Hampden-Sydney cruised to a 56-17 victory at the Northern Nash Football Complex, spoiling the Bishops' 2011 home opener. The loss drops Wesleyan to 0-2 on the season, while the Tigers improve to 2-0.

HSC senior quarterback Travis Lane struck early and often, finding Kyle Vance for a 36-yard touchdown just 51 seconds into the game. The TD pass was the first of seven for Lane on the day, and the first of four that Vance would catch. The Tiger defense was equally as strong in the opening quarters, holding Wesleyan to just 67 yards of offense in the first half en route to a 35-0 HSC lead at intermission.  The Bishops got their offense going in the third quarter by taking the opening kickoff and driving 81 yards in 10 plays for the score. The drive was capped by a 33-yard scoring run by Alston down the left side, and Kevin Quicker's point-after made it 35-7.

Hampden-Sydney responded with another Lane-to-Vance touchdown, this time from 25 yards out, and he promptly posted a 50-yarder just minutes later. NCWC senior Keith Blunt, however, recorded an interception on HSC's next possesion to set up a 20-yard scamper by Alston that made the score 49-14 heading into the fourth....

The Local Slant

The following article was on the Averett University Athletics site.  Hard to be positive after the beating they took on Saturday.

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. — Hampden-Sydney College dealt Averett a 63-9 loss in their season-opener on Saturday afternoon.  Averett (0-1), young and untested at several key positions, hung tight with Hampden-Sydney (1-0) through one quarter. The Tigers grabbed a 6-0 lead on Kirk Rohle's 12-yard run with 5:06 to play in the opening quarter, but Averett benefitted from a special teams mishap on the extra-point attempt. The hold was fumbled, and Averett's Roderick Doggett grabbed the stripped ball and returned it to the end zone for two points, cutting Hampden-Sydney's lead to 6-2.  The two teams didn't score again untl the Tigers broke through with a 25-yard touchdown pass from Travis Lane to Rohle with 6:39 left in the half. From there, Hampden-Sydney's well-oiled offense took over, adding two more touchdowns to take a 28-2 lead at halftime.

Hampden-Sydney, which appeared in the NCAA playoffs a year ago and received votes in the D3Football.com preseason poll, tacked on five more touchdowns in the second half, including four in the fourth quarter.  Averett got a late 14-yard touchdown pass by Philip Kwiatkowski to Owen Hayden for its only offensive points.  Running back Ke'Von White led Averett offensive with 18 carries for 69 yards in his collegiate debut, while Jeff Redd added eight rushes for 55 yards. Hayden finished with a team-high four receptions for 44 yards.  Linebacker Isaac Green led Averett's defense with eight tackles. Robslin Emmanuel added a 16-yard interception return.
Averett will look to rebound in its home-opener next Saturday against Randolph-Macon College at 1 p.m.
